OVERVIEW

Kellogg's Student Design Contest

In my consumer packaging class, two of my classmates and I took part in the 2024 Student Design Contest organized by Kellogg’s and PAC Global.

The Challenge:

We were tasked with redesigning the packaging and branding for Pringles potato crisps, focusing on creating a more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable solution. Our goal was to deliver an innovative and groundbreaking design that would set new standards in the snack industry.

My Role & Timeline

THE PROBLEM

Pringles' crisps are not easily accessible.

Pringles' existing packaging was designed to address customer complaints about broken, greasy, and stale chips. However, the tube-shaped form factor presents a few new problems:

  • The current can is too narrow in width, making it difficult to grab chips when reaching towards the bottom of the packaging

  • Customers often have to dump crisps out when nearing the bottom of the can, which causes a mess

  • The packaging is not sustainable, and it cannot be recycled as it is comprised of paper, plastic, and metal

DESIGN PROCESS

Refreshing Pringles' Branding

In planning a bold structural redesign of the packaging, we felt the need to refresh the overall branding to align with the modern look of the new structure. We wanted to retain the iconic Pringles mascot to ensure the product remained easily recognizable.

DESIGN PROCESS

Creating a Compressible Can

We believe that a compressible Pringles can could offer a variety of benefits for consumers:

  • Portability: A compressible can would be more portable, allowing customers to easily carry the can in bags or pockets after consuming some of the chips

  • Storage Efficiency: Once some of the chips are eaten, customers could compress the can to save space, reducing clutter in bags or storage areas.

  • Freshness: Compressing the can after opening could help minimize air exposure, keeping the remaining chips fresher for a longer period.

  • Better Environmental Impact: A compressible can would be more environmentally friendly, as it would take up less space in recycling bins, making disposal easier and reducing waste volume.

  • Ease of Use: As the can compresses, it is easier to reach the chips at the bottom, reducing the need to tilt the can or get chips stuck.

Structural Design Iterations

Physical mockups were produced using a large-format Konica Minolta printer and precisely cut and scored with a Konsberg cutting machine.

Version 1

Created a digital mockup using Preps, though it lacked a lid and base and had significant structural issues.

Version 2

A physical mockup was created, but the lid and bottom did not fit properly. Additionally, the can's narrow width prevented chips from fitting inside.

Version 3

Increased the can's width, applied visual design adjustments, and reduced the size of the lid, though it still did not fit properly.

Version 4

The lid now fits properly, the structure accommodates chips perfectly, and the can is easily compressible.
